Last time I wrote here about building bridges and it occurred to me that in the Ramayana (an epic ancient poem the teachings of which are still tightly woven into the cultural tapestry of india today) there is another building of a bridge which proves just as useful….here is part of the story….
Lets begin with Sita: our lovely stoic fiery feisty and unfortunate princess.
Things were looking good. She married after all Rama, a god incarnate. A divinity walking the earth. Married to a God who, as if this were not fortune enough, also happened to be a king. And he was literally adorable. So the trajectory of her life was a rosy one. Being a princess-to-be-queen the thought of living a life of ease and in the lap of luxury must have lodged firmly in her minds eye. She had much to look forward to.
Consider this for a moment….You are set to become the “First Lady” when unexpectedly you are informed that you have been toppled from the top of the Royal Hierarchy, that your home would no longer be luxurious nor safe within the walls of your city as suddenly you and your husband have become “persone non grate”. Due to intrigue and a political plot, it is not a castle but a forest that would become your home. You are officially in exile.
